Bell, Book, and Candle

FOR GRT’S FALL PRODUCTION OF BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE BY JOHN VAN DRUTEN.

Show dates are October 13-15, 20-22, 27-29. This show will be directed by Meagan Lamb.

Gillian Holroyd is one of the few modern people who can actually cast spells and perform feats of supernaturalism. She casts a spell over an unattached publisher, Shepard Henderson, partly to keep him away from a rivals and partly because she is attracted to him. He falls head over heels in love with her at once and wants to marry her. But witches, unfortunately, cannot fall in love, and this minute imperfection leads to a number of difficulties. Ultimately, the lady breaks off with her companions in witchery, preferring the normal and human love offered her by the attractive publisher. But before the happy conclusion of the romance, Gillian comes very near to losing him.

Roles:

Gillian “Gill”* Holroyd: Late 20’s to early 30’s, but mature for her age. Feeling in a rut after returning home from travels, perhaps what sets her interest in Shep in motion. Knows that she cannot fall in love and keep in line with her family and friends, she faces a difficult decision when the spell takes a turn and she falls for the human Shep.
*Pronounced as Jillian & Jill*

Shepard “Shep” Henderson: Late 20’s to early 30’s. An upstairs tenant of Gillian’s who lives on the floor between her and Miss Holroyd, Gillian’s aunt. He is a publisher, seeking an eccentric author’s business on his next book. He is engaged to a former rival of Gillian’s, yet the spell Gill casts has him completely in love with her within minutes. His anger when he discovers the use of the spell is volcanic.

Miss “Queenie” Holroyd: Gillian’s aunt, late 50’s, early-to-mid 60’s. She is an odd-looking woman, vague, fluttery, and eccentric. She speaks in a high, feathery voice, with a trilling little laugh. As a witch, she is unable to do even basic spells, and concocts odorous potions. She frequently uses her limited ability to spy on Shep, and seems to feel no remorse for doing so.

Nicky Holroyd: Gillian’s younger brother, early-to-mid 20’s, engaging, impish, and has a somewhat impertinent personality. He is mischievous, and often helps Queenie cast spells. He is an out-of-work artist who loves his sister dearly, but easily sees through her attempts to deceive herself and others.

Sidney Redlitch: Early-to-mid 50’s, at first appearing shambling, messy, and slightly drunk. Obsessed with identifying and writing about witchcraft, both in different countries, and also closer to home. He is a true believer, fascinated by the idea of magic, and feels somewhat slighted when others take it as a joke.
